Purpose
- oblique builder bending sideways with the weight held overhead
- overhead puts the load at the end of a long lever, so a fraction of the weight
a side bend needs loads the obliques just as hard
- it also lengthens everything down your side before the rep starts, so the
stretch is deeper than a weight held low reaches
Execution
Stand with your feet hip-width apart, pressing a dumbbell or a plate overhead
with one arm locked out. Brace your trunk.
- bend sideways away from the loaded arm, keeping the arm locked overhead
- descend until you feel the stretch up your loaded side
- bend back upright, driving from the obliques
- keep the weight directly above your shoulder throughout
- finish all reps on one side before switching
Use far less weight than you side bend with. The lever is doing the work here,
not the dumbbell.
