Overhead triceps extension
Overhead triceps extension
Purpose
- triceps builder with your arms overhead and the weight behind your head
- the long head of the triceps crosses the shoulder, so taking your arms
overhead lengthens it: the stretch a pushdown cannot reach
- the moment arm is biggest at the bottom and gone at lockout, so it loads the
stretch hard and the top is nearly free
Execution
Sit or stand holding a single dumbbell in both hands, pressed overhead with your
arms extended and your elbows pointing forward. Brace your trunk.
- lower the weight behind your head by bending your elbows
- keep your upper arms vertical and your elbows pointing forward
- descend until you feel the stretch along the back of your arms
- pause briefly in the stretched position to maximize tension
- extend your elbows to press back up
When the set gets heavy, bang out a few more reps in the bottom half to milk the
stretched position.
