Purpose
- oblique builder bending sideways against a weight held at your side
- lateral flexion is the obliques' other job, and nothing a rotation movement
does loads it
- holding the weight low keeps the lever short, so it takes real weight to load:
this is the side bend you can go heavy on
Execution
Stand with your feet hip-width apart holding a dumbbell in one hand at your
side, other hand on your head or hip. Brace your trunk.
- bend sideways towards the weight, letting it travel down your leg
- descend until you feel the stretch up your opposite side
- bend back up, driving from the obliques on the working side
- stay in the same plane rather than leaning forward or back
- finish all reps on one side before switching
Do not counterbalance by leaning away at the top. The rep finishes when you are
upright.
